Episode 1: Theology vs. Theologizing

It has been two years since I have written an article for this website. While I do intend to co

ntinue writing, I have also begun to step foot into the world of podcasting. My episodes will be posted on Spotify so you can follow me there. You can find episode one here.

This first episode is a very brief introduction to my podcast which is called The Layman Confessor and is mean to introduce the first topic series that I am covering: Reading Scripture. I believe that it is important to clearly distinguish our sources when it comes to learning about God and His creation. This is why I am taking time to comment on the difference between doing theology, and theologizing.

Theology is the study of God. This means, that the subject, goal, and purpose of theology is focused on God and His actions and intent. Doing theology looks like using the Scriptures as our primary source, and arguably our only source.

Theologizing, though it may use Scripture, focuses more on discussing God and His work and intent through secondary means: other books, or conversations for example. Though there may not be anything inherently wrong with this method, because it does not always emphasize God's revealed Word, we can often become distracted or over-emphasize some characteristic, or even our own struggles and thus lose sight of God's true character.
